Blue Light & Your Skin: The Modern-Day Glow Up

Let’s talk glow up! No, not that makeup tutorial you just watched. We’re talking about the light your devices emit. Your daily dose of scroll, post, repeat might be giving your skin more than just the ‘gram. With all of us glued to our screens more than ever, it’s essential to understand what blue light could be doing to your skin.

Hello, Blue!

Most of us are clued in about UV light’s naughty effects on our skin. Premature wrinkles, dark spots, sunburn, we get it. But slide over, UV rays! There’s a new guy in town – Blue Light. It’s that radiant energy from our phones, tablets, laptops, and TVs. While UV rays always took the blame for harming our skin, emerging studies hint that blue light might be a sneaky accomplice.

Blue Light vs. The Sun

If you’re picturing your devices as mini-suns, well, you’re not entirely wrong. While the sun remains the major source of light (and damage), our devices are adding their bit. Given the sheer number of hours we spend binge-watching our favorite shows or FaceTiming our squad, it’s a good idea to keep tabs.

Blue Light & Skin: Friends or Foes?

Research so far says it’s complicated. Some studies suggest blue light could contribute to aging signs and hyperpigmentation. Especially if you’re already prone to pigmentation, like with melasma, you might want to consider a screen detox. For now, we know blue light can affect our skin, but does that one hour of TikTok really count? Science is still out shopping on that one.

Should You Be Concerned?

The short answer? Maybe. Especially if you’re prone to conditions like melasma. While most of us are safe with our daily sunscreen, if you’re looking for extra protection, consider a sunscreen with blue light protection (here’s looking at you, iron oxide!). But always chat with your dermatologist before diving into any new skin routine.

Embrace the Glow, Protect the Glow

At the end of the day, we’re not saying ditch your devices. Just be mindful. Maybe take those Zoom meetings outdoors (with sunscreen, of course). And if you’re dealing with skin issues, consult a skincare expert. Remember, you’re radiant. Let’s keep it that way!
