Tattoo Gratitude: A Guide to Tipping Your Tattoo Artist

So, you’re finally taking the leap and getting that coveted piece of ink. Congratulations, darling! Tattoo prices vary widely, depending on factors like size, complexity, and who’s holding the needle. An in-demand artist might command a heftier price tag, but isn’t a little extra worth it for your skin’s forever look?

But after you’ve budgeted for your dream tattoo, there’s another financial etiquette to consider: tipping. Yes, ladies, the tipping question isn’t just reserved for your dinner check.

So, how much should you shower your tattoo artist with gratitude, in dollar terms? Tattoo artist Lina Shuliar provides some perspective. “Like most service industry professionals, a 20 percent tip is standard. But remember, tipping doesn’t always have to be monetary. Over our average 3 to 8-hour session, we form connections with clients, and I’ve received many thoughtful gifts from clients as tips.”

So, if your skin’s masterpiece costs $1000, consider tipping $200. If it’s a $500 tattoo, a $100 tip would be appropriate.

According to Treena Orchard, a researcher exploring the body as a transformative canvas (and a tattoo enthusiast), the tip often correlates with the size of the tattoo and the time taken. “For smaller pieces, you’d tip less. A two-inch piece taking 30 minutes might warrant a $25 tip. But a larger, detailed piece that requires over 90 minutes? Consider a $40 tip.”

For Shuliar, your satisfaction level with the final artwork is the most crucial tipping determinant.

Are you scheduling multiple sessions for your larger piece? You might be wondering about the tipping protocol in such scenarios. “A common practice is to leave a small tip after each session, with a generous tip upon completion of the project,” Shuliar advises.

And as for the cash or card conundrum? “Cash tips are always preferred,” says Shuliar. “Many artists also accept digital payments via Venmo, CashApp, or PayPal.”

When in doubt, remember that communication is key! If you’re unsure about tipping etiquette, don’t hesitate to ask your artist or the studio manager.

Now that you’re armed with this knowledge, go forth and get inked, beauties!
